October half term activities for all the family

Keeping kids entertained can be tricky at the best of times, never mind during half term! 

But don’t worry, we’ve found all the best activities in Greater Manchester, Cheshire and Wirral happening over the October break.  


Free pumpkin carving in Manchester 

Where: Parks across Greater Manchester 

When: 27th – 31st October 

Carve your very own pumpkin for Halloween at one of these free sessions taking place at nine different Manchester parks. This event is suitable for ages 1 and up, and all materials are provided.

Potion making in the Witch’s Kitchen at Wythenshawe Park 

Where: Wythenshawe Park’s Horticultural Centre  

When: 29th and 30th October 1-3pm 

Double, double, toil and trouble, fire burn and cauldron bubble! Your little witches and wizards can have fun making their own spooky potions in this hands-on session hosted by Wythenshawe Park’s Horticultural Centre. It’s free to attend and is recommended for children aged 3 – 12.  


Family-friendly ‘Library of Enchantment’ escape room in Manchester 

Where: Z-arts in Hulme, Manchester 

When: Tuesday – Saturday, booked in one hour sessions 

Ready to test your puzzle-solving skills? Step into the Library of Enchantment where you’ll try to find Billi the Bookworm before the time runs out! 

This is the perfect activity for all the family, as you can tackle the escape room in groups of up to eight players (aged 8+, or aged 6+ with adult supervision).

Pottery painting and spooky stories in Salford Quays 

Where: Kargo MKT, Salford Quays 

When: Wednesday 29th October, 10am-12pm 

This ‘Paint a Pot & Read A Lot’ event in Salford Quays is a fun-filled morning where your little ones can get creative with pottery painting while listening to some Halloween stories.

WayWord Festival in Chester  

Where: Storyhouse, Chester 

When: Saturday 25th October – Sunday 2nd November 

WayWord Festival is a celebration of stories for all the family! Featuring bestselling children's authors such as Jacqueline Wilson, this packed festival programme includes storytelling activities and bookish events that kids of all ages will love.

Halloween comic book workshop in Warrington 

Where: Time Square, Warrington 

When: Thursday 30th October, 11am-12pm, 1pm-2pm and 2:30pm-3:30pm 

Young artists can learn how to create spooky characters and have a go at drawing an original Halloween-themed comic! Learn from cartoonist Marc Jackson and get the best tips and tricks for making your first comic strip.

Day of the Dead festival in Wirral 

Where: Floral Pavillion, New Brighton, Wirral 

When: Saturday November 1st, 12pm 

Experience incredible performances and enjoy delicious food at this festival inspired by Mexico’s Day of the Dead. There’ll be music, dancing, face painting and more! 

Not only will it be a great time, but you’ll also help raise money for the charity Deaf Active, supporting deaf young people in Merseyside. 


Scavenger hunt and arts and crafts in Birkenhead 

Where: St James Centre, North Birkenhead 

When: Monday 27th – Friday 31st October 

The St James Centre in Birkenhead is hosting a jam-packed programme of activities over October half term, including a scavenger hunt, arts and crafts, and a Halloween disco.
