5 May half term activities the whole family will love

The weather is brightening up, summer is just around the corner, but now you’ve got to find a way to keep the kids entertained for an entire week. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! We’ve had a hunt for some of the best activities happening around Greater Manchester, Wirral and Cheshire over the half term break.

Solve a mystery at a medieval castle

Where: Beeston Castle, Cheshire

When: Every day in May half term, 10am-5pm

Explore the medieval ruins of this historic castle on this special mystery trail made for May half term. You and your family will be superspies for the day, looking for clues to find a top-secret message that’s gone missing somewhere in the castle. Will you be able to find it before it falls into the wrong hands?

You can book your space through the English Heritage website here.

Meet some not-so-creepy crawlies at Tatton Park

Where: Tatton Park, Knutsford

When: 28th May 2026, 10:30am-12pm

If your kids are the type to really get stuck in, the Wildlife Explorers session at Tatton Park is for them! Your little explorers can try pond dipping and bug hunting, and learn all about some of the wildlife that call Tatton Park home. Don’t worry if bugs aren’t your thing though – you can also say hello to the park’s resident farm animals, birds, and even a herd of deer. Tickets to the Wildlife Explorers session can be bought online via the National Trust website

Join the teddy bears’ picnic at the library

Where: Wirral Libraries (multiple venues)

When: 28th May, 3pm

Your little ones and their bears can enjoy games, crafts, stories and snacks while surrounded by books at your local library. The event is recommended for children aged 4-8, but they welcome teddy bears of any age!

All you need to do is book your free place, and come along to Birkenhead Central Library, Bebington Central Library, Wallasey Central Library, or West Kirkby Library.

Discover the joy of painting and dance at The Whitworth

Where: The Whitworth, Oxford Road, Manchester

When: 28–29 May 2026, 10:30am–1:00pm

These relaxed, welcoming sessions will encourage artists of all ages to find inspiration in The Whitworth’s exhibitions then create their own works of art. Pick up a paintbrush to make your own masterpiece, or just groove to the Caribbean-inspired beats and express yourself through dance instead.

Classic boardgames, but bigger!

Where: RHS Bridgewater, Worsley, Salford

When: 23rd May-31st May, open 10am-6pm

This half term, the Royal Horticultural Society are running a Great Garden Game-A-Thon at their gardens across the UK, including RHS Bridgewater in Salford. Play giant versions of classic games like dominos, draughts and chess while surrounded by beautiful plants and flowers. Then, after all the games, you can explore the garden’s incredible meadow maze. Just try not to get lost!
