Best things to do in Manchester over the Late May Bank Holiday

It’s shaping up to be a scorcher of a bank holiday this week, and Manchester is a city that’s hard to beat when the sun is shining! If you’re looking for ways to make the most of the heat, we’ve got you covered.

Chorlton Water Park

A firm favourite among both students and locals, Chorlton Water Park is the perfect spot to soak up the sunshine over the weekend. With a central lake and meandering paths leading into woodlands and wildflower meadows, it’s a true escape in the city. What’s more, as Manchester's first designated local nature reserve, there’s plenty of wildlife to keep an eye out for!

RHS Garden Bridgewater

For those with green fingers, a visit to RHS Garden Bridgewater is a must. This 154-acre garden in Salford has a stunning mix of things to explore, including the tranquil Chinese Streamside Garden, the lush Paradise Garden, and the lovely Kitchen Garden. With shaded natural play areas, it’s also a brilliant day out for families. After you’ve explored the grounds, why not check out nearby attractions like the Bridgewater Canal or the historic Worsley Village?

Castlefield Roman Fort

Did you know that Manchester is almost 2,000 years old? The bustling metropolitan area of Castlefield was once home to a Roman fort called Mamucium. Although little of the original structure remains, parts of the fort have been reconstructed. It’s a fascinating place to learn more about the city's history - and an exciting adventure for little ones!

The Fallowfield Loop

For fitness enthusiasts, a run or cycle along the Fallowfield Loop is a brilliant way to see the city while staying shaded. This former railway line stretches from Chorlton-cum-Hardy to Fairfield and forms a green corridor around four kilometres south of the city centre, linking parks and open spaces. Why not stop off along the way for a recharging coffee and slice of cake in Chorlton?

Explore the Rochdale Canal by barge

Ian Brown of The Stone Roses once said, “Manchester has everything except a beach.” While that may be true, if there’s one thing we have in abundance, it’s canals! Reaching from the rugged heights of the Pennines all the way to Sowerby Bridge, the Rochdale Canal offers a unique way to explore the city and beyond. Hire a canal boat, pack a picnic, and take in the views along the picturesque waterways. Why not moor up at one of our favourite pubs, The Wharf, for a drink in the sun?

Whatever you’re up to this bank holiday weekend, we hope you have a good one!
