A day in the life of a Creamline milkman

A day in the life of a Creamline milkman

While most of us are winding down for the night, a milkman’s day is just beginning. If you’ve ever wondered what a day in the life looks like for our dedicated team, we’re here to delve into the details – from the moment they load up their floats to recharging for their next round of delivering local goodness to our customers’ doorsteps!

Evening prep

The day kicks off in the late evenings for many of our team, imagine that! By 11pm, the milk floats are loaded up at many of our depots, ready for the night’s deliveries. As Pete, one of our milkmen, puts it, he’s ready for his “Monday marathon”: a solid eight-hour delivery sprint. A steaming mug of coffee comes in handy during these early mornings.

The journey through the night

The night is when the magic happens! Once loaded up, our milkmen then get going on the quiet streets of Greater Manchester and Cheshire. Delivering milk during these hours is a solitary job, often only accompanied by other night owls like nocturnal badgers and foxes. But the mission is clear: making sure every household has their milk in time for the morning!

Early morning smiles

For many of our rounds team, being able to deliver a great service to their customers is hands down the best part of their jobs. We asked Phil Holgate, who has been doing the rounds for over 27 years, what the favourite part of his job is, and this is what he had to say:

“It has to be talking to the customers, meeting new faces and building up relationships. Many of my customers say it wouldn’t be the same if I wasn’t doing the round, so I know they appreciate that I go the extra mile. I know all my customers by their first name, they have my mobile number and can call me to change their order for next day delivery - you can’t get better than that!”

Daytime duties

Once our milkmen have made their deliveries to your doorsteps, and the sun starts to rise, they head back to the depot to unload, often around 6am or 7am – just in time for breakfast! Getting to catch the lovely, bright sunrises in the summer is one of the best parts of the job.

For some, they’ll continue work at the depot, whether that’s supervising or handling admin.  Jon Ryan, one of our multifaceted milkmen, has been a proud champion of our school roadshows, helping kids understand how our milk gets from the field to the breakfast table – how about that for variety?! You can get a deeper insight into Jon’s day in the life here.
