Spending time in the garden this autumn?
As the nights start to draw in and temperatures begin to drop, getting out in the garden might be the last thing on your mind. But did you know that autumn is actually a great time to plant some new crops and flowers?
At Creamline, we have a Home and Garden range where you can pick up your compost, grow bags and more. As part of our Daily Essentials range, it’s easy to add those garden supplies onto your standard shop of milk, bread and eggs.
Let’s take a closer look at why September and October are good for gardening, and what grows best over the next couple of months.
Why this season is great for gardening
During the autumn months, your garden is still warm from the summer sunshine, but there’s also plenty of rain, making it the perfect environment for new roots. These rainy days combined with cooler temperatures also mean your garden won’t need watering as often.
A top tip for gardening in early autumn is to rake up all the recently fallen leaves. Keep them covered and stored away to compost over winter, and you’ll have a handy supply of mulch to use for next year.
What to plant this month
Autumn growing season is a combination of two key things: planting veggies and greens to harvest this winter, and planting spring bulbs so they’ll be flowering next year.
This is the perfect time to plant spring flowers, because it gives them time to establish in the ground over winter. Just remember to cover them with a cloth or fleece when the weather gets frosty.
Look out for these bulbs at your local garden centre:
- Daffodils
- Crocuses
- Tulips
But it’s not just flowers! There’s a huge variety of root vegetables and leafy greens that you can’t plant now and have ready for Christmas.
Here's some of the best crops you can plant in autumn and harvest in winter:
- Carrots
- Turnips
- Radishes
- Spinach
- Kale
But if you just can’t wait that long for fresh greens, we’ve got a range of fruit and veg that you can order straight to your doorstep.
