Three twists on pigs in blankets to try this Christmas

Succulent sausages wrapped in streaky bacon – you really can’t go wrong with classic pigs in blankets. But why not try something new this festive season? From herby to spicy and a little bit of both, we’ve cooked up three delicious ways to add some extra flavour to this traditional Christmas side.

For each of these recipes, you want to start by wrapping your sausages in a rasher of bacon. Or, make it even easier and get pre-done pigs in blankets instead; ours are expertly prepared by local family butchers Little Pigs Didsbury.

Just follow the recipe for the marinade or seasoning you want to try, then pop your pigs in blankets into the oven for 200°C for 20 minutes until the sausages are cooked through and the bacon is crispy.

1. Honey, sage and mustard pigs in blankets

Classic seasonal flavours combined in one sticky marinade to give you a delicious festive side dish.

Once you’ve got your pigs in blankets, you only need three more ingredients for the marinade: wholegrain mustard, clear honey (a squeezy bottle will help!), and finely chopped fresh sage leaves.

When making the marinade, you’ll want twice as much honey as mustard, so it’s runny enough to brush over the sausages. Mix all three ingredients in a bowl then use a spatula or clean hands to coat the pigs in the marinade on all sides.

2. Italian pigs in blankets with pesto

These pesto and parmesan pigs in blankets are super simple but are guaranteed to go down well with all the family.

Just coat each sausage with a teaspoon of pesto – either classic basil pesto or one with tomatoes taste great. Then top them with a sprinkling of parmesan (the more the merrier) and pop them in the oven until the cheese goes golden and crispy.

3. Chinese-style salt and pepper pigs in blankets

If your local Chinese takeaway did pigs in blankets, they’d do them like this. Coat your bacon-wrapped sausages in Chinese five-spice seasoning and serve them with a spicy mix of stir-fried veggies.

You can use any veggies you usually enjoy in a stir-fry, but we recommend thinly sliced bell peppers, white onion and chilli.

Put the seasoned pigs in blankets and veg in an oven tray and roast until crispy. Serve with sesame seeds sprinkled over the top, and enjoy!

The honey, sage and mustard ones are perfect on Christmas Day itself, and guests will love the pesto or salt and pepper pigs for Friendsmas or Boxing Day.
